Wet Food Transitions

Moisture changes everything!

Hydration is foundational not optional

Cats have a low thirst drive. Especially in climates like Australia, cats often need support to keep hydrated when on a purely dry food diet.

Moisture in wet food supports:

  • Kidney function

  • Urinary tract health

  • Bladder comfort

  • Dilution of urine (reduces crystal formation risk)

Stress can temporarily shut down digestion

Concentrated urine (common in dry-fed cats) increases the risk of:

  • Urinary crystals

  • Bladder inflammation

  • Blockages (especially in male cats)

Wet food helps:

  • Increase urine volume

  • Lower urine concentration

  • Support a more neutral urinary environment

For vocal or sensitive cats, bladder discomfort can show up as irritability or aggression and toileting outsie of the litter tray.

❋ A more species-appropriate diet

Cats are obligate carnivores which means that they must consume meat to survive, as a cat’s body requires nutrients found only in animal flesh.

Premium wet foods typically:

  • Contain higher animal protein

  • Have fewer carbohydrates (or fillers)

  • Avoid the starch binders needed in kibble

Lower carb load may support:

  • Stable weight

  • Lean muscle maintenance

  • Better metabolic balance

Many dry foods require carbohydrate levels that cats simply didn’t evolve to process in high amounts.

❋ Improved digestive comfort (and a calmer body)

Higher moisture + animal-based protein can mean:

  • Softer, easier stools

  • Reduced constipation risk

  • Less digestive strain

For cats prone to tension (jaw, whisker tightness, belly guarding), gut comfort often correlates with emotional ease.

A hydrated gut supports a calmer body.

Behaviour & Nervous System Regulation

Chronic low-grade dehydration can contribute to:

  • Irritability

  • Restlessness

  • Increased vocalisation

  • Lower stress tolerance

When the body feels safer internally, behaviour often softens.

You may see:

  • More relaxed posture

  • Fewer tension behaviours

  • Better sleep
